The East Gate Books imprint of M.E. Sharpe is dedicated to the publication of works that lead to a greater understanding of Asia and its peoples. It represents the best in Asian Studies publishing for scholars, students, and general interest audiences.

East Gate Books titles have won many important prizes, including three prestigious Joseph Levenson Prizes for the Best Book on Twentieth Century China (China's Environmental Crisis, by Vaclav Smil, in 1994, Unstately Power, by Lynn T. White, in 2000, and Peasants Without the Party, by Lucien Bianco, in 2002); the Grand Prize for Korean Literary Translation (Peace Under Heaven by Man-Sik Ch'ae, in 1995); and the Sprout Award for the Best Book on International Environmental Studies (Asia's Environmental Movements, edited by Yok-shiu F. Lee and Alvin Y. So, in 2000). Our 1994 translation of Oe Kenzaburo's The Pinch Runner Memorandum was published several months before Oe won the Nobel Prize for Literature. In addition, The Kwangju Uprising, edited by Henry Scott-Stokes and Jai Eui Lee, features a Foreword by Kim Dae Jung, President of South Korea, and winner of the 2000 Nobel Peace Prize, and Theater and Society includes a rare English language translation of one of the most influential plays of Gao Xingjian, winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize for Literature.

Founding editor Doug Merwin is a consultant for the Asian Studies book program at M.E. Sharpe.
